New Medicare Cards Coming in April 2018

SHARE

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Dec. 21, 2017, began emailing medicare beneficiaries regarding the eventual paper mailing of new Medicare cards beginning April 2018.

The new Medicare card numbers will no longer be based upon the social security number of the beneficiary.  The cards will be mailed to the address on file with the Social Security Administration (SSA).  Among many other reasons, obtaining the new Medicare number is critical for beneficiaries to access their information contained in Medicare’s Plan Finder database which matches beneficiaries drug information with available plans and drug costs within each plan.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to confirm that SSA has correct addresses in its system.  Beneficiaries can visit SSA online at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.  Beneficiaries can call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.  TTY beneficiaries can call 1-800-772-1213.  Beneficiaries can also visit their local SSA office.  To find the address of the nearest SSA office, beneficiaries can visit the Social Security Office Locator and input their zip code to find the nearest office.
